Our Favourite Green Teas

Green tea is refreshing, energising, and benefits from a plethora of flavours and nuances. Sometimes blended with fragrant flavours such as jasmine or exotic fruits, and sometimes, pure green tea can offer a plethora of notes and nuances; it needs nothing added at all.

Our organic Gu Zhang Mao Jian is one of those. The loose-leaf tea is produced in China and has a unique character with a rounded, gentle sweetness. Incredibly, and what makes this tea a special one, is that the delicate buds and leaves can only be picked ten days a year. This short harvest creates a cup that is slightly sweet and refreshing.

About Green Teas

Like oolong and black teas, green tea is made from the Camellia sinensis plant leaves. However, what makes green tea unique is that the leaves do not undergo the same withering and oxidation process that is used to make other teas. Rather than being withered, rolled, fermented and dried, the leaves are steamed or fried. This process gives a much fairer colour that is lighter and green-ish.

There are several varieties of green tea based on growing conditions, production processes, and harvest time. Two distinct methods are either produced in the sun or the shade.  Green tea plants are harvested around three times a year, grown in rows, and are pruned to harvest shoots in the standard way. The first flush happens in early May, the second harvest in June/July and the third picking in early August. Green tea gets its name from the emerald, green colour created when brewing unprocessed, unfermented tea leaves.

How Much Caffeine does Green Tea Contain?

Green tea does contain caffeine but far less when compared to an equal amount of black tea. Because tea acts as a brain stimulant, some people find that drinking green tea increases energy levels, concentration and mood.

As a certified organic retailer, we stock both organic and non-organic green teas. This may be of significance to you if you’re interested in wellness or ethical shopping. Our entire green tea range holds something for everyone, so if you’re after organic teas, we’re the tea shop for you. Find out more about our Green Teas here!
