The History of the Teabag

Tea bags are a staple in many, if not all, homes in the UK. They are so convenient we rarely give them a second thought. However, without them, we couldn't function in the mornings, and according to the Independent, we consume over 61 million tea bags each year.

History of the Tea Bag

It has been well documented that the first tea bag was 'invented' by accident by New York tea merchant Thomas Sullivan. Keen to send tea samples to potential customers, he wrapped small amounts of tea leaves in silken pouches. Some of his customers assumed that the bags were to be infused, much like the metal strainers of the day, and the humble tea bag was born.
