Rooibos Teas
We love Rooibos tea! It has a robust flavour, similar to black tea, but it is naturally caffeine-free. Rooibos' unique flavour lends itself well to infusing with a plethora of flavours from cream, orange, chocolate and many other herbs and spices such as cinnamon and ginger. It's delicious on its own and is also good with a splash of milk.
What is Rooibos Tea
Rooibos tea is also known as 'redbush tea'. It is the national beverage in South Africa and is drunk by the gallon worldwide. In parts of Southern Africa, loose-leaf Rooibos is drunk with milk and sugar as Bush Tea. We also love it on its own and infused with other flavours.
Rooibos tea is made from the Aspalathus linearis plant, unlike green, white and black teas made from the Camellia sinensis plant. The Rooibos shrub is fine-leaved, rugged and wild-looking, but interestingly, it is not at all red. Instead, the bush has soft needle-like green foliage and yellowish flowers that emerge in the spring. The bush thrives in the picturesque fields around the Cederberg coastal mountains close to the Western Cape province of South Africa. Incredibly, the region's topography is particularly suited to the Rooibos plant and attempts to grow it elsewhere have not been successful.
The distinctive red colour comes from fermentation, similar to traditional black tea production. Farmers harvest by hand, bruise and distress the cuttings, and then leave them to dry in the natural sun. The oxidisation process is entirely natural and begins shortly after harvest.
Why We Drink Rooibos Tea
Rooibos's naturally soft yet robust taste also makes a perfect baseline for many other flavours. From orange to Chai spices, flavoured Rooibos is universally popular.
Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine-free; it is delicious, semi-sweet and aromatic with a flavour not too dissimilar to green or black tea.
Rooibos tea is packed with Vitamin C and contains antioxidants and minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, and alpha-hydroxy acid, which can promote good skin health. Many claims are being made, and serious research is being conducted in Japan and Europe.
Rooibos Fact
Rooibos Tea contains no naturally bitter tannins, so no matter how often you brew the loose-leaf tea or how long you leave it in the pot, it will never get bitter.
